I was arrested May 25th on a bogus charge of DUI. I have been driving for 61 years, with an average of well over 15,000 miles per year, with anything from two wheels to 18 wheels. I owned two big rigs, plus some driving for other owners, and I spent a couple of years as a travelling salesman, and two decades photographing and writing about motorsports for a living. I have been activities director for a sports car club, and drove an all-out former race car (MGA Twin Cam) on the street for several years--yep, DOHC engine and 4-wheel disk brakes on a car built in 1959! If I am not able to drive for any reason, I am neither afraid nor ashamed, to pull the blanket out of the trunk, recline the seat, and go to sleep until the problem is solved. Just two nights before I was busted, I came out of Wal-Mart at 3:30 AM, and decided I was too tired to drive home safely. Bingo. Out came the blanket, down went the seat, and I slept in itheir parking lot for three hours. Granted, one of my headlights had been sacrificed to a dead deer a few weeks earlier, and I had already purchased a replacement headlight unit, but was unable to mount it after several tries, because I could not get more than about three of the eight or so bolts that hold it in, lined up. I may have to buy a 4-ton porta power unit to move the sheet metal back into position.
